Leading causes of death in 2023 in the Pays de la Loire region. 2023 Report.
Key Points
In 2023, 37,071 deaths were recorded among residents of the Pays de la Loire region, representing a standardized rate of 778 per 100,000 inhabitants, a decrease of 53 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants compared to 2022.
Male mortality was 1.7 times higher than female mortality in 2023 (a standardized mortality rate of 1,019 per 100,000 men compared to 597 deaths per 100,000 women).
Tumors and diseases of the circulatory system were the two leading causes of death in the region and in each department of the Loire in 2023, as at the national level, among both men and women.
External causes of morbidity and mortality were the third leading cause of death in the region in 2023, driven primarily by accidents of daily life, suicides and self-inflicted injuries, and accidental falls. Among those under 65, external causes remained the second leading cause of mortality after tumors.
Regional disparities were observed, with a higher age-standardized all-cause mortality rate in Vendée among the departments of the Loire region.
For the four leading causes of death, the standardized mortality rate was higher in Vendée and exceeded the national level: neoplasms, diseases of the circulatory system, external causes of morbidity and mortality, and diseases of the nervous system and sensory organs.
The standardized mortality rate for mental and behavioral disorders was higher in Mayenne and Sarthe, exceeding the national rate.
