Suicidal Thoughts and Reported Suicide Attempts (Public Health France Barometer 2024 – Ages 18–79)
In 2024, among the general population, the prevalence of suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months among those aged 18–79 was estimated at 4.9%. It was 6.5% for reported suicide attempts in the lifetime and 0.4% for reported suicide attempts in the past 12 months.
Emergency department visits for self-harm (OSCOUR® 2024 – all ages)
In 2024, 912 emergency department visits for self-harm were recorded, representing 4.5‰ of total activity, stable compared to 2023.
Hospitalizations for self-harm (SNDS PMSI-MCO 2024 – all ages)
In 2024, 1,378 hospitalizations due to self-harm were reported, representing a standardized rate of 145 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants, a significant increase compared to 2023 (+11%).
Among women, the 11–17 age group continued to have the highest hospitalization rate for self-harm in 2024. The data are more stable among men and generally lower.
Drug overdose was the method used in 70.6% of hospital stays and was the most common method regardless of gender.
Deaths by Suicide (SNDS CépiDc 2023 – all ages)
In 2023, 83 suicide deaths were recorded, corresponding to a standardized rate of 10 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase compared to 2022, particularly among men.
Men had a higher suicide death rate than women, and the age groups most affected were those aged 25–44 and 45–64.
The most frequently recorded method of suicide on death certificates was hanging (48.8%). It was the most common method among men.
2024 Activities of the 3114 and VigilanS Prevention Programs
From June to December 2024, 3114, the national suicide prevention hotline, received 4,321 calls from the region.
In 2024, 1,151 people were enrolled in the VigilanS program, a post-hospital follow-up and monitoring system designed to prevent repeat suicide attempts.
