Status of Leptospirosis in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of May 24, 2018.
Summary
As of May 21, 2018, the number of leptospirosis cases reported in Réunion is higher compared to historical data from the past ten years (since 2008, when the surveillance system was established). After a peak in March 2018 (36 cases), the trend has been downward in April (18 cases). However, new cases are likely to occur in the coming weeks, and biological confirmation of any clinically suspected leptospirosis must continue.
Laboratory investigations using samples sent by the laboratory at the University Hospital Center of Réunion are currently underway at the National Reference Center to identify the leptospires (genomic species and/or serogroup) responsible for this outbreak. Additional epidemiological investigations will help better characterize the cases and explain the unique situation of the 2018 season.
