Leptospirosis Situation in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of February 21, 2017.
Summary
The year 2017 revealed some unusual trends in the epidemiology of leptospirosis in Réunion:
the number of cases rose again after two years of low numbers.
Proportionally, there were fewer cases between January and May, and cases were spread throughout the year, unlike in 2015 and 2016.
The average age of cases was lower than in previous years.
For the first time, exposures related to leisure activities (gardening, animal husbandry, fishing, hiking, swimming, etc.) surpassed agricultural or occupational exposures.
However, occupational exposures, the geographic distribution of cases, and the lack of wound protection or disinfection during high-risk activities are comparable to what was observed in previous years.
