Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of August 6, 2019.

Key Points

  • More than 48,650 clinically suggestive cases since the beginning of 2019: a decrease in the number of clinically suggestive cases in S29 (138) and S30 (73);

  • More than 17,990 cases have been confirmed since the beginning of 2019: the number of confirmed cases continues to decline in weeks 29 and 30, with 62 and 42 confirmed cases, respectively (unconsolidated data);

  • In week 30, half of the municipalities (13 out of 24) were still reporting cases;

  • St. Pierre and St. Paul currently represent the main hotspots;

  • Overall, the number of dengue cases is decreasing or stabilizing in municipalities where the virus is circulating, with the exception of St. Louis and St. Paul, where a slight increase in the number of cases was observed in week 30;

  • Two serotypes, DENV1 and DENV2, are still circulating throughout the island;

  • Vigilance remains essential regarding differential diagnoses, particularly for measles, as new cases are regularly diagnosed.
