COVID-19: Epidemiological Update from Réunion on September 3, 2020
Key Points
Situation in Réunion: increase in all indicators; circulation and spread of the virus on the island
The number of locally transmitted cases has been rising since Week 33, reflecting increased circulation of the virus in the population, including beyond the identified clusters. For the past two weeks, more than 90% of reported cases have been locally transmitted. Since Week 35, the incidence rate has exceeded the alert threshold.
The reproduction number (R) is estimated at 1.27 (significantly higher than 1), indicating that the epidemic is still on the rise.
Social gatherings and family gatherings (weddings, family meals) are the source of the majority of identified clusters. Recreational gatherings of more than 10 people have been prohibited in public spaces (beaches, communal areas, forests, etc.) since August 22. Therefore, protective measures must be strictly observed in all places and under all circumstances, including in private spaces (particularly homes and private property).
