COVID-19: Epidemiological Update from the Meeting on October 14, 2021

Key Points

  • In Réunion, the Delta variant has largely replaced the Beta variant on the island. In week 40, all epidemiological indicators continued to decline. The incidence rate was below the alert threshold of 50 per 100,000 inhabitants for the third consecutive week. Furthermore, the numbers of new hospitalizations and ICU admissions remained at a low and stable level.

  • Despite an increase in vaccination rates among younger age groups, these rates remain low; furthermore, among older age groups, the trend is stable. Thus, in this context of the lifting of the public health emergency, still-low vaccination coverage, and school vacations, it is advisable to continue the combined measures—vaccination, preventive measures, and contact tracing—to limit the spread of the virus and prevent any resurgence of the epidemic.
