COVID-19: Epidemiological Update from the Meeting on August 27, 2020
Key Points
Situation in Réunion: increase in all indicators, local transmission, and spread of the virus on the island
The number of locally transmitted cases rose sharply in weeks 33 and 34, reflecting increased circulation of the virus in the population, including beyond the identified clusters. For the past two weeks, 90% of reported cases have been locally transmitted. The incidence rate rose from 5 in week 32 to over 40 per 100,000 inhabitants in week 34, a rate slightly higher than the national rate.
The reproduction number (R) is estimated at 1.89 (significantly higher than 1), according to SI-DEP data from August 19 to 25, 2020.
Family and social gatherings (birthdays, family meals, etc.) are the source of the majority of identified clusters: it is important to follow the recommended protective measures during these events as well.
Test-Trace–Isolate
Performing a diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2 in the presence of suggestive clinical signs (as outlined in the HCSP advisory of April 20), even in the absence of exposure, is essential for the early identification of infected individuals, the initiation of investigation and contact tracing, and the implementation of protective measures.
Any healthcare professional can report suspected transmission chains or clusters to the ARS to quickly identify any local transmission: ars-reunion-signal@ars.sante.fr.
Protective measures: mask-wearing, hand hygiene, physical distancing
It is important to follow protective measures, keeping in mind that the virus can be transmitted by people who do not have symptoms.
