Chikungunya and Dengue in Réunion. Bulletin dated April 23, 2025.

Key Points

  • Since the beginning of 2025, the outbreak has continued, with an estimated 113,000 chikungunya-related medical visits on the island, including 20,520 visits in week 15.

  • To date, the epidemic has stabilized at a high level of transmission across the island, with disparities between the north and the south.

  • Since week 11, 47 severe cases of chikungunya have been reported, primarily among the elderly or infants requiring intensive care.

  • In addition, 9 deaths occurring between weeks 11 and 14 among people over 70 with underlying health conditions have been classified as chikungunya-related. Nine other deaths are also under investigation.

  • Dengue activity is currently low on the island, with 16 confirmed locally acquired cases (and 27 probable cases) since the beginning of the year.
