The Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) is an intergovernmental organization comprising five member states: the Union of the Comoros, France (Réunion), Madagascar, Mauritius, and the Seychelles. Following the chikungunya epidemic that affected the region in 2005–2006, these states decided to develop a regional project aimed at strengthening epidemiological surveillance, early warning, and epidemic response. The network has initiated improvements in regional cooperation on health surveillance by focusing on human resources training, strengthening countries’ surveillance, investigation, and diagnostic capabilities, as well as on the exchange of information among professionals responsible for health monitoring and disease control, through weekly teleconferences that facilitate discussions on the epidemiological situation and health event alerts. The network enhances the responsiveness of public health officials and supports decision-making to combat the spread of diseases within IOC member countries. Sustaining the network, expanding cooperation on response efforts, and improving coordination between human and animal health will be the next objectives to achieve. (R.A.)
