High Blood Pressure in Mayotte: Prevalence, Awareness, Treatment, and Control in 2019, the Unono Wa Maore Study
Introduction - In 2008, the prevalence of hypertension was estimated at 44% among people aged 30 to 69 living in Mayotte, with two out of three people with hypertension unaware of their diagnosis. The objective of this study was to provide a new estimate of the prevalence of HTN in Mayotte in 2019, assess awareness of the diagnosis and management, and describe the characteristics of the hypertensive population. The prevalence was similar among men (38.5%) and women (38.3%, p=0.95). The prevalence of certain risk factors was high, with 75% of those with hypertension being overweight or obese (vs. 53% of those without hypertension), 13% reported having diabetes (vs. 4%), and 69% were economically inactive (vs. 63%). Among those with hypertension, 48% were aware of their diagnosis. Women were more likely to be aware of their diagnosis than men (56% of women with hypertension vs. 38% of men with hypertension, p
