Summer Sun Exposure Among Tourists on the Mediterranean Coast of Occitanie. Summary of the Main Findings of the PRISME Study (Prevention and Impact of Sun Exposure in the Mediterranean)
In Occitanie, the Mediterranean coastline stretches for 200 km. In the spring and summer, the region—which experiences intense sunlight (UV indices around 8 or 9)—welcomes many tourists. In this context, Santé publique France sought to analyze these tourists’ sun-related behaviors through the PRISME study (Prevention and Impact of Sun Exposure in the Mediterranean). The study’s objectives were: to identify the factors influencing tourists’ sun protection or sun exposure behaviors; to measure and compare the effectiveness of two prevention interventions aimed at changing tourists’ sun protection behaviors. These two interventions were: an intervention highlighting the health risks of UV exposure (sunburn, eye damage, cancers); an intervention highlighting the damage UV rays cause to physical appearance (premature skin aging). The study was conducted in 2019 at eight campsites along the Mediterranean coast among French tourists aged 12 to 55. Tourists selected at random and volunteers could receive either the intervention focused on health risks, the intervention focused on physical appearance (in the form of individual prevention interviews with specialized counselors), or no intervention at all, and were required to complete face-to-face questionnaires at the beginning and end of their week-long camping vacation. These same tourists were surveyed again using an online questionnaire administered in the fall of 2020 (more than a year after the intervention). This summary presents the main findings of the study, highlights the harmful effects of sun exposure, identifies the factors influencing sun protection behaviors, outlines effective interventions, and offers key recommendations for tourists, tourism professionals, local authorities, and policymakers.
