Measles Surveillance in the Occitanie Region. Epidemiological Update as of May 2, 2019.

Key Points

The number of new weekly cases appears to have been declining in France since Week 15. In Occitanie, a certain degree of stability has also been observed since Week 10 (Weeks 16 and 17 not yet consolidated).

In Occitanie: 219 cases since January 2019, including 19 new cases since the last update, representing one-quarter of the cases reported in France during this period.

  • 12 of the 13 affected departments. Among them, 3 departments are primarily affected: Aude, Haute-Garonne, and Pyrénées-Orientales.

  • In total, 58 cases were hospitalized and 25 developed complications (including 17 cases of pneumonia and 1 case of encephalitis).

  • 25% of cases occurred in clusters (schools, traveling communities, daycare centers, etc.).

  • Vaccination coverage is insufficient to prevent any epidemic risk in Occitanie: 63–82% with two doses by age 24 months, depending on the department (target: 95% to eliminate the disease).

  • The number of new cases diagnosed in emergency departments remains high, peaking in week 17 (including the Monday holiday) with 24 cases.
