Forest fires in the Aude. Update as of August 12, 2025.

Key Points

The fire has been considered under control since August 10, 2025. According to ATMO Occitanie, concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) increased in certain departments at the end of last week (notably Gard). The health data assessment covers the Narbonne area near the fire and a wider perimeter including the Gard department:

For the Narbonne area (data presented in this bulletin):

  • As of August 11, data collected as part of the monitoring system established by Santé publique France do not indicate an increase in general activity indicators at the emergency facilities selected for our analyses.

  • A one-time increase in visits for anxiety disorders was observed on August 7.

  • Two cases of smoke inhalation were recorded in the Narbonne emergency department on August 6 and 9.

  • An increase in emergency department visits for feeling unwell was observed on August 10 (also observed more broadly in the Aude department). More than half of these cases involved people aged 65 or older. However, this may be linked to the current heatwave conditions in this department.

In a wider area potentially affected by smoke (data not included in the bulletin):

  • In the Perpignan metropolitan area:

    • A slight increase in cases of dyspnea/respiratory failure was observed on August 7, 2025, though the numbers remained within the usual range for the period (<10);

    • An increase in burn cases over the past 7 days (patients residing outside the Aude department);

  • In the Gard department, while there was no overall increase in activity, a trend was observed for certain types of diagnoses, though no proven link to the fires was established:

    • Headaches/migraines treated by SOS Médecins have increased over the past 7 days;

    • Three cases of carbon monoxide poisoning;

However, it is difficult to directly link these trends to the smoke emitted during the fire.
