Public Expectations Regarding the Salindres Industrial Site: A Comparative Analysis of Views Held by Local Residents and an Environmental Advocacy Group
Introduction. This study aims to examine the representativeness of an association by determining the extent to which ADISL, a local environmental advocacy group, represents the expectations of residents living near the Salindres industrial site with regard to public authorities. Materials and Methods. The population’s expectations were gathered as part of an epidemiological study conducted on a representative sample (n = 1,495) of the population living around the industrial site. An open-ended question was asked by telephone in a questionnaire regarding quality of life: “What would you expect from public authorities?” A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the population’s expectations was conducted through thematic classification of the content. The association’s demands were collected based on an analysis of its blog. A thematic content analysis of the association’s discourse was performed. Results. The population’s expectations focus on transparency regarding information on industrial risks (53%), environmental protection (22%), personal safety and health protection (16%), regulatory oversight of industrial activities (14%), and the conduct of health and environmental studies (12%). In addition, the public expresses expectations regarding the preservation and development of industrial activity (11%), or, conversely, the closure and relocation of the site (7%). These expectations are similar to those of the association, with the exception of the demand for the closure of the industrial site, which the association does not advocate. Conclusion. The results tend to lend credibility to the association’s role as a spokesperson for local interests, but would benefit from validation through further analysis.
