Suicidal Thoughts and Reported Suicide Attempts (Public Health France Barometer 2024 – Ages 18–79)
In 2024, among the general population, the prevalence of suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months among those aged 18–79 was estimated at 4.9%. It was 5.5% for reported suicide attempts in a lifetime and 0.4% for reported suicide attempts in the past 12 months.
Emergency department visits for self-harm (OSCOUR® 2024 – all ages)
In 2024, 8,129 emergency department visits for self-harm were recorded, representing 5.5‰ of total activity, relatively stable compared to 2023 (-2%).
Women aged 11–17 and 18–24 were the most affected by emergency department visits for self-harm (21.5‰ and 18.1‰ of total visits in this age group related to this diagnosis, respectively). Since 2021, an upward trend has been observed in these age groups.
Hospitalizations for self-harm (SNDS PMSI-MCO 2024 – all ages)
In 2024, 9,424 hospitalizations for self-harm were recorded, representing a standardized rate of 158 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase compared to 2023 (+6%).
Among women, the 11–24 age group continued to have the highest hospitalization rate for self-harm in 2024, particularly among adolescent girls aged 11 to 17, with 766 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants. The rise in rates among girls and women aged 11 to 24 continued in 2024, while rates remained stable for other age groups and among men.
Drug overdose was the method used in 81% of hospital stays and was the most common method regardless of gender.
Deaths by Suicide (SNDS CépiDc 2023 – all ages)
In 2023, 981 suicide deaths were recorded, corresponding to a standardized rate of 15 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, stable compared to 2022 (14 per 100,000 inhabitants).
Men aged 65 and older continued to have the highest suicide death rate in 2023, with a rate of 43 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
The most frequently recorded method of suicide on death certificates was hanging (50%), regardless of gender.
2024 Activities of the 3114 and VigilanS Prevention Programs
From June to December 2024, 3114, the national suicide prevention hotline, received 25,299 calls in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
In 2024, three centers participated in the VigilanS program for follow-up and monitoring to prevent repeat suicide attempts in the region, and 3,964 people were enrolled in the program.
