Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of February 27, 2014.
Mortality:
The number of deaths (all ages and those aged 75 and older) recorded at the regional level remains above the alert threshold, with figures typically observed during this period.
Emergency room visits by vulnerable populations
The number of emergency room visits among children under 1 year of age remains high. An increase has been observed among those aged 75 and older.
Reportable Diseases (MDO)
No significant changes this week in Aquitaine.
Virology and enterovirus
meningitis Circulation of seasonal respiratory viruses according to the Bordeaux University Hospital, notably influenza A and RSV; a few cases of enterovirus meningitis according to Oscour®.
Acute gastroenteritis (AGE)
In Aquitaine, activity is slightly increasing according to the Oscour® network and SOS Médecins. Nationally, there is a slight increase in emergency department visits and a decrease in activity in primary care; the epidemic threshold has not yet been exceeded for this season.
Influenza and influenza-like illnesses
An influenza epidemic is underway, with type A influenza viruses predominating. The cumulative number of severe cases (338, including 28 in Aquitaine) is higher than that recorded last year at the peak (296, including 7 in Aquitaine). At this stage, surveillance of severe cases shows no evidence that the severity of the epidemic exceeds that observed over the past five seasons.
Bronchiolitis
Bronchiolitis activity is stable in France and has decreased (falling below the epidemic threshold) in Aquitaine according to SOS Médecins, Oscour®, and the AquiRespi network, with 102 children treated on February 22–23.
Carbon monoxide poisoning
Since September 2013, 37 incidents have been reported, involving 83 exposed individuals and 59 transported to emergency departments (France: 839 incidents, 2,538 exposed, 24 deaths).
