Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of February 19, 2015.
Mortality: Since early January, a significant increase in deaths has been observed, primarily among older adults. This increase is being seen across all regions. Nationally, an increase in deaths with a mention of pneumonia/respiratory disease (excluding inhalation) on death certificates across all age groups, and a mention of heart failure, decompensation, or respiratory conditions among people aged 85 and older has been observed. This is a preliminary estimate that will need to be confirmed.
Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: According to available data, emergency department activity among vulnerable populations (under 1 year of age and 75 years and older) remains stable, still close to alert thresholds.
Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situation this week.
Acute gastroenteritis (AGE)Moderate activity in Aquitaine (below epidemic thresholds). In France, activity is declining for SOS Médecins consultations and slightly increasing in emergency departments (children and the elderly).
Influenza and influenza-like illnessesIn Aquitaine, activity continues to intensify, with 24.6% of cases related to influenza for SOS Médecins and 1.7% for Oscour® as of February 19, 2015; there has been an increase in reports of respiratory infections in nursing homes and severe cases of influenza in intensive care.
BronchiolitisActivity is declining (below the epidemic threshold for several weeks). Activity in the AquiRespi network is also decreasing, with 98 cases treated during the last on-call shift.
Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis: Significant circulation of seasonal respiratory viruses according to the Bordeaux University Hospital, notably influenza A (49%), RSV (17%), and coronavirus (15%).
Carbon monoxide poisoning (update as of 02/11/15)Since September 2014, 35 episodes of CO poisoning affecting 118 people in Aquitaine (2 deaths). Nationally, 27 deaths have been recorded since September 2014.
