Measles Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of May 2, 2018.

  • 1,025 cases reported in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (59% of which were in Gironde) between November 1, 2017, and May 2, 2018

  • Confirmation of the downward trend in the weekly number of cases, with a peak reached in week 13

  • 23% occurred in clusters (universities, healthcare facilities, schools, prisons, the traveling community, etc.)

  • 21% hospitalized (12 cases in intensive care, 1 death)

  • 83% inadequately vaccinated (self-reported), insufficient vaccination coverage (71–81% with two doses by age 24 months depending on the department, compared to 95% needed to eliminate the disease)

  • 75% increase in MMR vaccine sales between early 2017 and early 2018 in the region (Source: wholesale distributors)

  • Circulation of only the D8 genotype of the virus in 2018 and the last two months of 2017 (Measles National Reference Center)
