Key Points

West Nile Virus

As of August 22, 2023, 8 confirmed or probable human cases with symptoms that began during the second half of July have been identified: 7 cases in Gironde (residents of the Bordeaux metropolitan area) and 1 case in Charente-Maritime. Investigations are underway for two other individuals. In addition, 2 equine cases have been reported (in Gironde and Charente-Maritime) as well as 5 avian cases (in Charente-Maritime). All these cases indicate active circulation of the West Nile virus in Gironde and Charente-Maritime.

Usutu Virus

As of August 22, 2023, three locally acquired human cases have been reported in Gironde. Additionally, one avian case was identified by the National Reference Laboratory in Charente-Maritime. The Usutu virus is therefore actively circulating in Gironde and Charente-Maritime.

Chikungunya, Dengue, Zika

From May 1 to August 18, 2023, 45 imported cases of dengue and 3 imported cases of chikungunya were identified in the region (compared to 30 imported cases of dengue and 3 imported cases of chikungunya between May 1 and November 30, 2022). To limit the emergence of local transmission chains, 88 entomological surveys (mosquito searches) and 60 vector control treatments were carried out around cases residing in or visiting the region.
