Malaria in French Guiana. Update as of April 25, 2024.

Summary

Malaria activity has remained at moderate levels since early March.

In January and February, infections occurred mainly along dirt roads and in rural areas of the Littoral region, as well as in suburban areas, particularly in the municipality of Roura (the villages of Cacao and Favard).

In March and April, infections occurred mainly at gold panning sites (one active outbreak remains in the municipality of Kourou) and in rural areas/along dirt roads in the Littoral region.

Key figures

  • 258 malaria cases diagnosed in the region, 61 patients hospitalized, 0 deaths.

  • 255 P. vivax (Pv) cases, including 99 relapses (39%), 2 P. falciparum (Pf) cases, and 1 P. ovale (Po) case.

  • 6 imported cases (including the 2 Pf and 1 Po), 98 indigenous cases, and 55 unclassified cases.
