Health Surveillance in French Guiana. Bulletin of February 5, 2026.
Key Points
Dengue
Dengue activity was low in French Guiana, with 1 confirmed case in the past two weeks.
Chikungunya
On January 26, a case of chikungunya was confirmed by RT-PCR in French Guiana. Investigations classified it as autochthonous (contracted in French Guiana). Since then, four additional cases have been confirmed, including three autochthonous cases and one imported from Suriname. The identified strain is similar to the one currently circulating in the Americas. The virus had not been actively circulating in the territory since 2015.
Malaria
The number of malaria cases reported in the territory was moderate and stable over the past two weeks, with 18 cases recorded (9 each in S04 and S05, versus 20 in total in S02 and S03). Of these 18 cases, 2 were caused by P. falciparum (imported from the African continent) and 16 by P. vivax, including 3 relapses.
In total, 42 malaria cases were recorded in January, exceeding the levels observed during the last two months of 2025 and representing a 56% increase compared to January 2025. Of note is the identification of a transmission cluster in the municipality of Maripasoula (outside the town center) with 14 cases recorded since the end of the year (S52 to S05, provisional data).
Acute respiratory infections
Flu-like illness: The flu epidemic, although still active, is currently in a declining phase. The predominant subtype is Influenza A(H3N2). Since S2025-47, 22 severe cases have been recorded. Influenza activity continues to intensify in French Guiana, with the number of visits to primary care centers (CDPS) rising again over the past two weeks and a stable situation in emergency departments, though at a high level. The circulating subtypes identified are Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2). Since the start of the pre-epidemic phase, 17 severe cases have been recorded (provisional data).
Bronchiolitis & COVID-19: Activity related to bronchiolitis and SARS-CoV-2 was low throughout the territory.
Diarrhea
Diarrhea-related activity was low in the CDPS, local hospitals, and the emergency departments of the three hospitals.
