Chikungunya in French Guiana. Bulletin dated April 2, 2026.

Key Points

Since the detection of the first case of chikungunya at the end of January, 81 cases have been biologically confirmed by hospital and private laboratories, primarily in the western coastal region (89%), where 8 outbreaks are currently being monitored. One case, in a patient who had not traveled outside the island of Cayenne, was laboratory-confirmed. This sector has therefore entered a phase of sporadic transmission. The number of clinically suggestive cases seen in outpatient clinics at local health centers and nearby hospitals, as well as the number of emergency department visits for chikungunya at the three sites of the University Hospital, remain low. Hospital surveillance has identified 22 hospitalized cases, including only one severe case (provisional classification pending final classification by infectious disease specialists). No hospitalizations have been recorded in the past two weeks; however, updates are ongoing.
