Epidemiological Surveillance in the Lorraine Region. Update as of September 17, 2015.

Key Findings

  • Since week 36, the number of allergy diagnoses recorded by emergency departments has remained stable, with 100 weekly diagnoses in week 37, representing less than 1% of total diagnoses. However, activity related to these conditions is decreasing for the SOS Médecins Meurthe-et-Moselle association, with 12 weekly diagnoses in week 37 (versus 17 diagnoses in week 36). This condition accounts for 1.5% of the association’s activity.

  • While the weekly number of recorded asthma diagnoses had been low for several weeks, in week 37 it doubled for both data sources: 78 diagnoses made by emergency departments (versus 41 in week 36) and 15 diagnoses by the SOS Médecins Meurthe-et-Moselle association (versus 6 in week 36). However, these fluctuations remain within the usual range. This condition accounts for less than 1% of emergency department activity in Lorraine and just under 2% of that of the SOS Médecins Meurthe-et-Moselle association.

  • The observed increase in asthma primarily affects children under 15 years of age. When considering this age group, asthma accounts for 2.2% of emergency department activity and 4.5% of the SOS association’s activity. This increase is also observed throughout France and is expected at this time of year. It is linked to the resurgence of respiratory viral infections as community life resumes after the summer school break, but other factors, such as exposure to allergens or the discontinuation of asthma maintenance therapy during the holidays, could also play a role.

  • According to the National Aerobiological Surveillance Network (RNSA), the allergy risk is very low for the four departments of Lorraine.

  • Based on available data, no unusual increase in mortality has been observed in Lorraine over the past 4 weeks. Since the delay in reporting death data exceeds 7 days, data for week 37 are currently being consolidated.
