Epidemiological surveillance in the Alsace region. Update as of September 17, 2015.
Highlights
In week 37, allergy-related activity at the SOS Médecins Strasbourg association returned to expected levels following the peak observed in week 36. The association’s doctors made 26 diagnoses, representing less than 2% of the total diagnoses in week 37. As for the SOS Médecins Mulhouse association, its activity remained within the usual range (14 diagnoses made, or 2% of the total number of diagnoses).
Asthma-related activity for both the SOS Médecins Strasbourg and Mulhouse associations increased in week 37. Doctors from the Mulhouse association made 26 diagnoses (vs. 9 in week 36), representing 3.7% of total diagnoses. For doctors at the Strasbourg association, the increase was less pronounced, with 15 diagnoses made (vs. 9 in week 36), representing 1.1% of total diagnoses.According to data from both associations, this increase primarily affected children under 15: 12 of the 15 patients (80%) diagnosed by SOS Médecin Strasbourg and 19 of the 26 patients (73%) diagnosed by SOS Médecin Mulhouse. Finally, it appears that among those under 15, asthma accounted for 2.7% (SOS Médecin Strasbourg) and 5.8% (SOS Médecin Mulhouse) of visits, respectively. This increase is also observed throughout France and is expected at this time of year. It is linked to the resurgence of respiratory viral infections following the return to group settings after the summer school break. However, other factors, such as exposure to allergens or the discontinuation of long-term asthma treatment during the holidays, could also play a role.
According to the National Aerobiological Surveillance Network (RNSA), the allergy risk associated with grass pollen is very low in the Bas-Rhin department. In the Haut-Rhin department, no pollen-related allergy risk has been detected.
According to available data, no unusual increase in mortality has been observed in Alsace over the past 7 weeks. Since the delay in reporting death data exceeds 7 days, data for week 37 are currently being consolidated.
