Epidemiological Surveillance in the Alsace Region. Update as of December 17, 2015.

Highlights

  • Since Week 40, activity related to influenza and influenza-like illnesses has remained low in the region’s emergency departments, as well as among SOS Médecins associations and the Sentinelles network.

  • In week 50, the bronchiolitis outbreak among children under two years of age continues in Alsace. A total of 53 and 42 cases of bronchiolitis were diagnosed in emergency departments and by doctors from the SOS Médecins association, respectively. Among the diagnoses made in emergency departments, 37.1% required hospitalization. This condition, which accounts for approximately 11% of cases among children under two years of age in emergency departments and at SOS Médecins, is higher than what was observed during the same period in the two previous years. This increase in cases has been observed in most French regions except in Île-de-France and Nord, where the peak has already passed.

  • According to the HUS virology laboratory, the number of respiratory viruses detected is on the rise in week 49. The main viruses identified are: rhinovirus or enterovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), metapneumovirus, and parainfluenza virus.

  • In week 50, the number of weekly diagnoses of gastroenteritis and diarrhea increased compared to previous weeks. A total of 111 and 347 diagnoses were made in the emergency departments of the OSCOUR® network (8 out of 15 departments reported data) and by physicians from the SOS Médecins associations, respectively. This activity is slightly lower than that observed during the same period in previous years.

  • According to the HUS virology laboratory, the circulating enteric viruses are primarily rotavirus and norovirus.

  • During week 50, one case of carbon monoxide poisoning (suspected or confirmed) was reported in Alsace.
