Epidemiological Surveillance in the Alsace Region. Update as of April 3, 2014.

Key Points

  • As is the case nationwide, the flu epidemic is coming to an end in Alsace. The data indicate a less severe epidemic this season compared to the previous two winter seasons.

  • An increase in the number of bronchiolitis cases was observed in week 13 by the SOS Médecins association in Strasbourg; however, this was not observed by the association in Mulhouse.

  • Activity related to gastroenteritis remains stable and consistent with what was observed in previous years at this time.

  • The national aerobiological surveillance network indicates that Alsace is on alert for the risk of birch pollen allergies.

  • The heating season is coming to an end, and the number of CO poisonings in Alsace is higher than what was observed last year at the same time (36 incidents in 2013–2014 versus 26 incidents in 2012–2013). However, it remains lower than during the 2011–2012 heating season. This trend is not observed at the national level, where, conversely, an 18% decrease in cases was recorded compared to last year. The increase in reports from heating technicians in Alsace is likely linked to this phenomenon.
