Health Surveillance in Brittany. Epidemiological Update as of November 15, 2017.
Key Points
BronchiolitisPre-epidemic phase. Hospital emergency room visits have stabilized, accounting for 11% of visits with a coded diagnosis among children under 2 years of age (the third most common condition). The number of cases is higher than seasonal averages. The epidemic is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Increase in the proportion of RSV-positive samples at the Virology Laboratory of Rennes University Hospital (positivity rate = 23%) and decrease at Brest University Hospital (positivity rate = 9%).
Asthma: Sustained activity continues at SOS Médecins. The number of visits to hospital emergency departments is within seasonal averages. This coincides with continued significant viral circulation (though decreasing) of rhinoviruses and enteroviruses identified in respiratory specimens analyzed at the virology laboratories of the Rennes and Brest University Hospitals.
ENT Conditions: Demand for ENT care remains at a sustained level (SOS Médecins and emergency departments). Activity related to ENT conditions is expected to increase with the onset of the bronchiolitis epidemic.
Influenza and influenza-like illness: Sporadic detection of influenza A virus in respiratory specimens analyzed at the virology laboratories of the Brest and Rennes University Hospitals since mid-October.
