Health Surveillance in Brittany. Epidemiological Update as of January 18, 2017.

Key Points

Influenza and influenza-like illness: Epidemic activity (rising phase). A slight increase in the indicators tracked by both SOS Médecins (+5%) and hospital emergency departments (+11%). In both cases, levels are higher than in previous seasons during the same period. High activity in primary care: incidence rate of influenza-like illness estimated at 247 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [132, 362], unconsolidated Sentinelles data).Circulation of type A virus is decreasing at Brest University Hospital and increasing at Rennes University Hospital (positive rates of 19% out of 170 samples and 25% out of 207 samples, respectively).

Severe cases of influenzaSince week 44/2016, 48 severe cases of influenza have been admitted to intensive care in Brittany. Forty-seven were infected with a type A virus and one with a type B virus. The average age was 66 years. Forty-four patients had at least one risk factor targeted by vaccination.

Acute respiratory infection in nursing homesSince September 1, 2016, 90 outbreaks of acute respiratory infection (ARI) in nursing homes have been reported.

Bronchiolitis (children under 2 years of age)Epidemic activity (declining phase, peak in week 51). Continued decrease in emergency department visits (-19%), accounting for 16% of visits. Activity remains within seasonal averages. Circulation of respiratory syncytial virus is slightly decreasing according to data from the Brest University Hospital (positive rate = 8% out of 117 samples) and the Rennes University Hospital (positive rate = 16% out of 207 samples).

Gastroenteritis: Epidemic activity. Use of community emergency services remains steady, accounting for 10% of consultations. Decrease in use of hospital emergency departments (-11%). Activity remains slightly above seasonal averages in both sources. High activity in primary care: incidence rate of acute diarrhea estimated at 262 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [153, 371], unconsolidated Sentinelles data).
