Headlines - Surveillance of infections linked to the novel coronavirus (MERS-CoV): Update as of August 6, 2013
As of August 6, 2013, and since April 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) report on the global situation lists 94 cases of infection with the novel coronavirus (including 46 deaths). Cases have been reported by: - Saudi Arabia (71 cases, 39 deaths), - the United Arab Emirates (5 cases), - Jordan (2 cases, 2 deaths), and - Tunisia (2 cases plus 1 probable case who has died)
Cases have also been reported by four European countries, including Germany (2 cases, 1 death), France (2 cases, 1 death), Italy (3 cases), and the United Kingdom (4 cases, 3 deaths).
In France, 237 reports of suspected MERS-CoV infections since October 1, 2012—including 7 contacts of confirmed cases and 52 possible cases—have been tested (for a total of 59 tested cases): 2 have been confirmed to date (including 1 death).
In France, the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) updated a document on June 28 regarding the management and prevention of MERS-CoV infections, the coronavirus responsible for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV).
