The article presents the results of successive annual surveys conducted at the departmental level among 5,000 students in 1991–92 and 58,000 in 1992–93 to track changes in adolescents’ smoking behaviors and to serve as a tool for guiding prevention efforts at the local level. The prevention initiatives implemented and the evolution of the ongoing program are briefly discussed. The departmental project is carried out as part of a partnership between the Departmental Committee for Health Education, the Committee for the Fight Against Respiratory Diseases and Tuberculosis, the Academic Inspectorate, the CPAM, the Mutualité sociale agricole, and apprentice training centers.
