Dietary Intake and Nutritional Biomarkers Among Adults Aged 16 and Older in Guadeloupe and Martinique

Diet is a major risk factor for certain chronic diseases (obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.). According to the ESCAL survey, conducted in 2003–2004, the diet of Martinicans was characterized by low intakes of fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The observed nutritional situation was also linked to constraints specific to the island’s location (import costs, lower nutritional value of available products). Furthermore, the issue of land and marine contamination by chlordecone led to the dissemination of information on the need to limit consumption of certain fruits, vegetables, and fish.
