Cardiovascular and Neurological Diseases in Martinique. Bulletin of June 30, 2025.

Key Points

  • To better understand the figures presented in this bulletin, here are some methodological details: For each condition, the incidence corresponds to the number of patients hospitalized each year (annual average for the 2021–2023 period), and the prevalence corresponds to the total number of patients in 2022, whether newly diagnosed or already known since 2012. Standardization allows for the comparison of populations with different age and sex structures relative to the French population.

  • Between 2021 and 2023, the age- and sex-standardized incidence rate of patients hospitalized for ischemic heart disease in Martinique (235 vs. 459 per 100,000 inhabitants in France) was lower than that of France, with an average of 737 hospitalized patients per year. The standardized prevalence in 2022 was 2.5%, lower than that of France (5.5%). The standardized mortality rate (2020–2022) was also lower in Martinique compared to the national rate (32 vs. 59 per 100,000 inhabitants).

  • Between 2021 and 2023, the standardized incidence rate of patients hospitalized for heart failure in Martinique was lower than that of France (299 vs. 344 per 100,000 inhabitants), with an average of 896 patients hospitalized per year. The standardized prevalence was 2.2% in 2022 in Martinique, fairly close to that of France (2.5%). The standardized mortality rate (2020–2022) was also lower than in France (41 vs. 46 per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively).

  • Between 2021 and 2023, the standardized incidence rate of patients hospitalized for stroke in Martinique was higher than that of France (295 vs. 231 per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively), with an average of 903 patients hospitalized per year in Martinique. The standardized prevalence in 2022 was 2.4%, fairly close to the national prevalence (2.0%). The standardized mortality rate in Martinique was higher than that of France (87 vs. 58 per 100,000 inhabitants).
