Cardiovascular and Neurological Diseases in Guadeloupe. Bulletin of June 30, 2025.

Key Points

  • To better understand the figures presented in this bulletin, here are some methodological details: For each condition, the incidence corresponds to the number of patients hospitalized each year (annual average for the 2021–2023 period), and the prevalence corresponds to the total number of patients in 2022, whether newly diagnosed or already known since 2012. Standardization allows for the comparison of populations with different age and sex structures relative to the French population.

  • Between 2021 and 2023, the age- and sex-standardized incidence rate of patients hospitalized for ischemic heart disease in Guadeloupe (238 vs. 459 per 100,000 inhabitants in France) was lower than that of France, with an average of 750 patients hospitalized per year in the region. The standardized prevalence in 2022 was 2.8% in the region, lower than that of France (5.5%). The standardized mortality rate (2020–2022) was also lower in the region (35 per 100,000 inhabitants) compared to the national rate (59 per 100,000 inhabitants).

  • Between 2021 and 2023, the standardized incidence rate of patients hospitalized for heart failure in Guadeloupe was lower than that of France (290 vs. 344 per 100,000 inhabitants), with an average of 855 patients hospitalized per year in the region. The standardized prevalence was 2.3% in 2022 in the region, close to that of France (2.5%). The standardized mortality rate (2020–2022) was similar in the region compared to France (46 per 100,000 inhabitants).

  • Between 2021 and 2023, the standardized incidence rate of patients hospitalized for stroke in Guadeloupe was slightly higher than that of France (291 vs. 231 per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively), with an average of 886 patients hospitalized per year in the region. The standardized prevalence in 2022 was 2.5% in the region, comparable to the national prevalence (2.0%). The standardized mortality rate in the region was higher than that of France (83 vs. 58 per 100,000 inhabitants).
