Key Points

Extreme Heat, Heat Wave 

• The third heat wave began in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region on July 30. All departments in the region were placed under an orange heat wave alert for at least one day by Météo France, with the exception of Bouches-du-Rhône (yellow heat wave alert).

Mpox

• The number of mpox cases in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region has increased during the first six months of 2026 compared to the previous two years. In the second quarter of 2026, this number tripled compared to 2025. As at the national level, clade Ib has become the predominant strain even in the absence of travel.

Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika

• Since the start of enhanced surveillance (May 1), 49 imported cases have been identified in the region: 18 cases of chikungunya (+3 cases compared to the previous week) and 31 cases of dengue (+2).
• No locally acquired cases have been detected in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, but several outbreaks have been detected elsewhere in France: 2 dengue outbreaks and one chikungunya outbreak in Occitanie, and 2 chikungunya outbreaks in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

West Nile Virus Infections

• Two new locally acquired human cases were detected in the region. Both cases are residents of the Bouches-du-Rhône department. This brings the total number of human cases in the region to 3. Several equine cases were diagnosed in the same department.
