Chikungunya in French Guiana. Bulletin dated April 16, 2026.
Key Points
Since late January (S2026-04), 108 cases of chikungunya have been confirmed, mainly in the Western Littoral sector (82%), but cases have also been detected in the Cayenne Island, Savanes, and Maroni sectors in recent weeks, indicating an expansion of the virus’s geographic distribution across the territory. In the Western Littoral region, 8 outbreaks are currently being monitored, with an average of 4.0 cases per outbreak [min: 2 – max: 7]. Although the number of emergency department visits for chikungunya at the three university hospital sites remains low, it has also been increasing in recent weeks. Furthermore, hospital surveillance identified 30 hospitalized cases, with a distribution among common forms (70%), unusual forms (27%), and severe forms (3%) comparable to that observed during the 2014–2015 epidemic.
