Following the identification, through sequencing in Brittany, of a new variant (derived from Clade 20C), health authorities are implementing the necessary surveillance and support measures.
A new variant (derived from Clade 20C) has been detected as part of an outbreak at the Lannion Hospital Center in the Côtes d’Armor department. On March 13, 79 cases were identified, including 8 cases carrying the variant, as confirmed by sequencing.
Based on a preliminary analysis of the mutations in this variant and clinical and biological observations of infected patients, health authorities believe it is reasonable to classify this variant as under surveillance, i.e., in the WHO’s VUI (variant under investigation) as defined by the WHO, particularly due to the observation of several patients presenting typical symptoms suggestive of SARS-CoV-2 infection but with a negative RT-PCR test result on nasopharyngeal samples, and for whom the diagnosis was confirmed by serology or RT-PCR testing on deep respiratory samples.
Initial analyses of this new variant do not allow for conclusions regarding increased severity or transmissibility compared to the original virus. In-depth investigations are underway to better understand this variant and its impact. Experiments will also be conducted to determine how this variant responds to vaccination and to antibodies developed during previous infections. Finally, international authorities have been informed of the discovery of this variant.
Viruses constantly evolve through mutations in their genome. Specifically regarding the VUI variant derived from clade 20C, a system for detecting and monitoring possible cases of infection or carriage is being implemented by Santé publique France and the National Reference Centers, in collaboration with testing laboratories. This system covers a geographic area including Lannion, Guingamp, Saint-Brieuc, and Morlaix. The Directorate General for Health has also notified all healthcare facilities and healthcare professionals to raise awareness about monitoring this variant.
Finally, as a precaution, local authorities, prefectures, and regional health agencies (ARS) are stepping up measures to curb the spread of the virus, for example by accelerating vaccination efforts, reminding the public of the importance of preventive measures, and limiting gatherings.
