Published weekly, the epidemiological update on COVID-19 surveillance provides a detailed analysis of the indicators established by Santé publique France and its network of partners to track the progression of the epidemic and inform public policy decisions.
In week 25 (June 20–26, 2022), SARS-CoV-2 transmission intensified across the entire mainland. The incidence rate rose by more than 50% in nearly all age groups. New hospitalizations for COVID-19 were also on the rise across all age groups, with the highest rates observed among those aged 80 and older. The number of deaths also increased after several weeks of decline. In the overseas territories, incidence rates were rising in French Guiana and Guadeloupe.
In social and medical-social care facilities (ESMS), after six weeks of decline, the number of new confirmed cases rose again starting in week 22 (May 30–June 5). In weeks 24 and 25, 1,819 and 2,404 confirmed cases were recorded, respectively. Weekly Focus on page 8.
The BA.5 sublineage of the Omicron variant became the dominant strain, accounting for 59% of interpretable sequences in the Flash S24 survey (June 13), replacing the BA.2 variant, which accounted for only 21%. BA.4, meanwhile, was identified in 6% of sequences. In line with the rise of these sublineages, the presence of the L452 mutation in screening tests continued to increase (74% vs. 64% in S24). Additional information is available in the variant risk analysis dated June 15, 2022.
During this period of increased viral circulation, we all know the measures that protect us and those around us. Each of these measures counts: vaccination, preventive measures, testing, and isolation if a test is positive. This is our collective challenge to limit the spread of the virus: let’s rally together now so that every measure becomes second nature.
As of June 27, 2022, vaccination coverage in the general population was estimated at 79.8% for a complete primary vaccination series and 59.8% for the booster dose, with a slight upward trend. Only 25.5% of those aged 60–79 and 31.3% of those aged 80 and older eligible for the second booster dose have actually received it. In nursing homes, where a resurgence in the number of cases has been observed since week 22, vaccination coverage for the second booster dose was only 40.6% among eligible individuals, calling for particular vigilance in this population, which is at higher risk of severe infection or exacerbation of comorbidities related to COVID-19.
In the context of increased circulation of SARS-CoV-2, adherence to combined measures is essential, particularly to protect the most vulnerable populations. It remains necessary to self-isolate in the event of symptoms or a positive COVID-19 test. It is essential for individuals to follow preventive measures, including wearing a mask (in the presence of vulnerable people and in crowded indoor spaces, particularly on public transportation or at large gatherings), handwashing, and frequent ventilation of enclosed spaces.
