COVID-19: Epidemiological Update as of June 30, 2022

Key Points

In Week 25, SARS-CoV-2 transmission intensified across the entire metropolitan area, as did new hospitalizations, particularly among older adults, among whom coverage for the second booster dose remains insufficient.

  • Mainland France:

    • Incidence rates rising sharply across all regions and age groups

    • Rate of new hospitalizations on the rise, particularly high among those aged 80 and older

    Overseas territories:
    • Virological indicators remain at very high levels but are decreasing in Martinique

    • Increase in incidence rates in Guadeloupe and French Guiana

Variants

  • BA.2 is gradually being replaced by BA.5, which has become the dominant variant, accounting for 59% of interpretable sequences in the Flash S24 survey (June 13)

  • Increased presence of the L452 mutation in screening (74% in S25 vs. 64% in S24), linked to the rise of certain Omicron sublineages, including BA.5

Prevention

  • Vaccination as of June 27, 2022 (Covid Vaccine data):

    • Vaccination coverage for the booster dose remains stable at 74.6% among those aged 18 and older and at 84.5% among those aged 65 and older

    • Only 25.5% of those aged 60–79 and 31.3% of those aged 80 and older eligible for the second booster dose have actually received it

  • Given the increase in SARS-CoV-2 circulation, adherence to combined measures is essential, particularly to protect the most vulnerable populations:

    • It remains necessary to self-isolate if you have symptoms or test positive for COVID-19

    • It is essential for individuals to follow preventive measures, including wearing a mask (around vulnerable people and in crowded indoor spaces, particularly on public transportation or at large gatherings), washing hands, and frequently ventilating enclosed spaces
