In a survey released today, Santé publique France reports that Nutri-Score, the official nutrition labeling system in France and Belgium, is supported by 91% of the French public. One year after its launch by government authorities, the initial results on store shelves are encouraging: 85 companies have signed on, and 14% of French people have already purchased a product bearing the logo. The fact that a company displays the Nutri-Score on its products is viewed positively by a large majority of French people, with 7 out of 10 saying it improves their perception of the brand.
Widespread Consumer Acceptance of Nutri-Score
Santé publique France surveyed 2,000 people between May and June 2018 to assess French consumers’ awareness and perception of Nutri-Score1. This study confirms, once again, that the logo allows for a quick assessment of a product’s nutritional quality and helps guide consumers in their choices. Among those familiar with Nutri-Score, 91% consider it easy to understand and 86% easy to spot on packaging. That is why more than 9 out of 10 French people now support the inclusion of Nutri-Score on food products. A significant proportion of French people go even further, believing that its display should be mandatory (87%).
One year after its launch, encouraging initial results on store shelves
The results of Nutri-Score on store shelves are encouraging and promising. 14% of French people have already purchased a product featuring it. Among French people who are already familiar with Nutri-Score, 9 out of 10 say they are or will be influenced when shopping. The vast majority of people who have heard of the logo acknowledge that it can influence how they choose products, mainly by causing them to switch brands or limit purchases of products with a lower score.
Manufacturers and retailers called upon to take action
Following its national TV campaign, Nutri-Score has gained credibility and legitimacy. The fact that a brand chooses to display the logo on its products is viewed positively by a large majority of French people, with 7 out of 10 saying they would have a better impression of that brand as a result.
Santé publique France calls on manufacturers and retailers who have not yet joined this voluntary initiative to join the 85 companies that have already committed. As the owner of the registered trademark, it assures all companies of its support in their voluntary rollout across all EU countries. The use of Nutri-Score, a registered European collective trademark, is permitted under the European legal framework throughout the European Union and on all products placed on the market, provided the trademark is used in accordance with its terms.
