Once again this year, on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, Santé publique France and the Ministry of Health and Prevention, in partnership with the National Health Insurance, will kick off the latest edition of the Smoke-Free Month challenge.

This campaign, now a November staple, encourages smokers to quit for 30 days and already has over 92,000 registrants and 3,777 partners. To provide participants with the best possible support, smoking cessation tools are available to them, particularly on the dedicated website and through the Tabac info service app.
For the 2023 edition, magician and comedian Éric Antoine will serve as the challenge’s ambassador through the M6 entertainment show La France A un Incroyable Talent.

Smoke-Free Month: A Mobilizing Challenge with Public Health Benefits

Smoke-Free Month, the national and local initiative to help people quit smoking, has attracted more than 92,000 registrants as of October 27 this year. Since 2016, more than 1.2 million people have taken up the challenge.

Smoke-Free Month is an opportunity for smokers to join a collective effort and commit together to quitting smoking. It is an essential step that has proven its effectiveness over the years and requires being as close as possible to smokers to support them. Because boosting their motivation is crucial, Santé publique France and its partners—whose numbers grow each year—support all participants in sticking with this challenge, thereby increasing their chances of quitting smoking for good. Combating tobacco use is a public health priority, and it is only by working together that we will achieve a smoke-free France in the future.

Dr. Caroline Semaille, Director General of Santé publique France

Data on registrations for the years 2016 to 2022 has been available since early October on Géodes.

Smoke-Free Month is a challenge that brings people together, but above all, it is a program that has proven its effectiveness. According to OECD models, the initiative is projected to reduce healthcare costs by an average of 94 million euros per year between 2023 and 2050 (at an annual cost of approximately 12 million euros). Thus, for every euro invested in Tobacco-Free Month, more than 7 euros are saved in healthcare costs due to smoking cessation.

By 2050, “Month Without Tobacco” would help prevent, in particular: 241,000 cases of lower respiratory tract infections, 44,000 cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and 28,000 cases of cancer.

Furthermore, it would boost employment and labor productivity, with an estimated value of 85 million euros per year.

One month to quit smoking and increase your chances of quitting for good!

wide

With nearly 6 out of 10 daily smokers wanting to quit, Tobacco-Free Month is an opportunity to take on this challenge collectively, thanks to the support of various stakeholders (healthcare professionals, partners, local businesses, loved ones, etc.) who help participants stay motivated in their efforts to quit smoking. In fact, a tobacco-free month increases the chances of quitting smoking for good by five times.

Once again this year, grassroots initiatives are being rolled out to reach smokers where they are. Across the country, a Tobacco-Free Month booth will be set up for two days at high-traffic locations to provide useful information on quitting smoking.

A major media campaign to support the initiative

La France à un incroyable talent avec Mois sans tabac

For this edition, in addition to the usual campaign (posters, TV, radio, and digital), “Mois sans tabac” is teaming up with the M6 Group as part of a partnership lasting the entire duration of the campaign. In conjunction with the channel’s flagship program, La France A un Incroyable Talent, host and magician Eric Antoine invites smokers to take part in the Smoke-Free Month challenge and discover tools to help them quit. Through a series of videos, Eric Antoine motivates, supports, and advises smokers with enthusiasm and kindness. All of the group’s channels are participating in the campaign through various media aired on TV (M6, W9, and 6ter), online, and on the radio (Fun Radio), with the involvement of host Marion Gagnot, who is also committed to the initiative.

Tools tailored to everyone’s needs

Among the tools available to support participants are:

Tabac Info Service, a major smoking cessation support program, which includes:

  • 39 89, Tabac info service’s helpline, connects smokers with tobacco specialists to receive personalized, free support. Since May 31, 2023, 39 89 has been accessible to deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals via the Acceo platform.

  • The tabac-info-service.fr website offers a wide range of support content and tools (connecting with a tobacco specialist, testimonials, Q&As, etc.).

  • The Tabac info service e-coaching app, developed by the French National Health Insurance in partnership with Santé publique France, offers a comprehensive and personalized program to maximize the chances of quitting smoking for good.

By following the Facebook, X, and Instagram pages, participants can find daily support within the community, useful information, and advice to help them navigate the withdrawal phase.

Finally, a “Mois sans tabac” smoking cessation kit, which supports smokers throughout their quit journey, is available for free upon registration on the “Mois sans tabac” website or at any of the 18,000 pharmacies participating in the initiative.
