For more than 30 years, the Santé publique France Barometer has been an indispensable tool for understanding the behaviors, perceptions, and health determinants of people living in France. The 2024 edition breaks new ground by presenting all indicators at the regional level. This new perspective is a major contribution: it allows us to look beyond national trends to better understand the dynamics specific to each region, whether in terms of behaviors, perceptions, or exposure to health determinants.

While the indicators for the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region are relatively similar to those observed at the national level, the results highlight certain regional characteristics.

In fact, in 2024, two-thirds of adults in Nouvelle-Aquitaine report being in good general health, and, as at the national level, positive trends have been observed since the last edition of the 2021 Health Barometer, notably the sharp decline in smoking in our region. Nevertheless, while a large portion of the population reports knowing preventive measures against heat waves and recommendations on physical activity, and recognizes the benefits of vaccination, progress remains to be made in terms of reducing health risks. Indeed, the proportion of people reporting alcohol consumption above recommended limits remains high in the region, flu vaccination rates among those targeted by the vaccination campaign are insufficient, and chronic conditions such as high blood pressure affect a large number of people.

The Santé publique France 2024 Health Barometer, a strategic tool for regional stakeholders

The results of this Health Barometer also highlight the impact of social inequalities on the health of Nouvelle-Aquitaine residents across a majority of health indicators. Moving forward, it is necessary to better target the most disadvantaged and vulnerable populations through specific and tailored prevention campaigns.

Laurent Filleul, Regional Delegate for Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Santé publique France Nouvelle-Aquitaine

This survey reveals trends that should guide public policy and prevention efforts in Nouvelle-Aquitaine:

  • More than one in five adults reports having high blood pressure (the most common chronic condition), and about one in fifteen has diabetes

  • One-quarter of adults report exceeding the guidelines for low-risk alcohol consumption, a proportion that is among the highest in France

  • Approximately 16% of adults have experienced a depressive episode in the past 12 months, and one in 20 adults reports having made at least one suicide attempt in their lifetime; women, young adults, and those facing financial difficulties are at the highest risk

  • A large portion of the population reports having experienced at least one extreme weather event, and nearly a quarter has suffered psychological distress as a result

A unique observatory for understanding and addressing the population’s health behaviors

With 35,000 people surveyed, including nearly 2,500 in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, this survey is an essential tool for guiding public health prevention and information policies.

The 2024 Santé publique France Barometer marks a new milestone in understanding the population’s health status by offering, for the first time, a detailed analysis at the regional level. The 2024 edition collects data on 20 major public health issues (15 presented for 2025 and 5 in March 2026): tobacco and alcohol use, physical activity, sleep, vaccination uptake, mental health, etc.

Now updated every two years, this survey complements existing surveillance systems, and the data collected guides our prevention policies and helps us reduce inequalities.

Beyond the indicators, the Santé publique France Barometer highlights the influence of living conditions, social factors, and local environments on residents’ health. It also underscores the critical role of prevention, whether regarding mental health, addictions, health-promoting behaviors, or adaptation to the effects of climate change.
