For more than 30 years, the Santé publique France Barometer has been a one-of-a-kind survey that measures and tracks the health behaviors, perceptions, and opinions of people living in France. The 2024 edition breaks new ground by presenting all indicators at the regional level. This regional perspective allows us to look beyond national trends to better understand the specific dynamics of each region and thus effectively support local stakeholders.
While Brittany generally follows national trends, the results highlight regional specificities—which are generally more favorable than the national average, such as lower vaccine hesitancy and less sedentary lifestyles—but also vulnerabilities, notably a low willingness to reduce alcohol consumption, even though one-quarter of adults exceed the recommended limits.
The 2024 Public Health France Barometer: A Strategic Tool for Regional Stakeholders
By providing precise benchmarks on the population’s health status, the 2024 Barometer allows us to better understand the specific challenges facing Brittany. It stands out as an indispensable tool for supporting prevention efforts, reducing inequalities, and promoting health for all.
This survey reveals trends that should guide public policy and prevention efforts in Brittany:
Mental health: young women and people in precarious situations are more vulnerable to depressive episodes and anxiety disorders. A significant proportion of those affected do not seek care.
Addictions: Financial difficulties remain linked to higher rates of smoking.
Environment: Although exposure to extreme weather events and ticks is lower than elsewhere, anticipating future risks requires better public information.
A unique observatory to understand and influence the population’s health behaviors
With 35,000 respondents, including more than 1,800 in Brittany, this survey is an essential tool for guiding public health prevention and information policies.
This survey, recognized as being of public interest and statistical quality, provides information that cannot be obtained elsewhere: individual behaviors, opinions, knowledge, or health events not captured by existing surveillance systems. The 2024 edition collects data on 20 major public health issues (15 presented for 2025 and 5 in March 2026): tobacco and alcohol use, physical activity, sleep, vaccination uptake, mental health…
Now updated every two years, this data reveals current health and social trends and thus provides the information needed to develop and evaluate public health policies.
Beyond the indicators, the Santé publique France Barometer highlights the influence of living conditions, social factors, and local environments on residents’ health. It also underscores the critical role of prevention, whether in the areas of mental health, substance use, health-promoting behaviors, or adaptation to the effects of climate change.
