Survey and Recommendations for the Development of Effective Diet and Physical Activity Interventions Targeting Young People: Results of Action 11.6 of the 2014–2019 Cancer Plan

Action 11.6 of the Cancer Plan aims to promote education on nutrition and physical activity starting in preschool and elementary school, particularly during after-school hours as part of the school schedule reform. As part of this initiative led by Santé publique France, a survey of prevention and/or health promotion initiatives carried out across the country in 2013–2014 was conducted using the OSCARS database (Tool for Observation and Cartographic Monitoring of Regional Health Initiatives), the Mutualité Française database, and an online questionnaire on the INPES website. The selection criteria were: 1) Themes: nutrition and/or physical activity; 2) Target population: ages 3–18; 3) Years: 2013 and 2014; 4) Settings: school, after-school, sports, community organizations, university. The data from this survey were then compared to the effectiveness criteria identified in the literature to formulate recommendations for implementing effective interventions. A total of 887 initiatives were identified. The majority (96%) addressed individual determinants, 28% addressed interpersonal determinants, and 10% addressed environmental determinants. Nearly half (46%) addressed both diet and physical activity, and 21% involved parents. Regarding their implementation, 68% were carried out in school settings, and 34% lasted one year or longer. In light of the literature, this analysis underscores the importance of promoting the implementation of initiatives aimed at creating supportive environments and involving parents. In addition to these recommendations, this report highlights the importance of encouraging the evaluation of program effectiveness and the implementation of programs that have already been validated. The creation of a database to identify effective and promising interventions at the national level appears to be a relevant approach to making this data accessible to practitioners in the field.
