Evaluation of the Nutri-Score 2025 Campaign
In France, in March 2025, the Nutri-Score algorithm was updated to reflect changes in the food market, better incorporate new scientific findings, improve its alignment with dietary guidelines, and help consumers compare products even more effectively based on their nutritional quality. The principle behind Nutri-Score remains the same and continues to be based on the nutritional values table and certain elements of the ingredient list; however, the rules for calculating the score (particularly the thresholds for assigning points) have been revised. For example, this makes it easier to identify high-fiber foods and assigns stricter ratings to sugary and salty foods. It is estimated that between 30 and 40% of products will see their scores change. Economic actors participating in the program have two years to update their packaging by adopting the new Nutri-Score. It is in this context that Santé publique France (SpFrance) has implemented an educational communication campaign aimed at reminding consumers of the logo’s core elements and announcing the changes to the calculation method. To define the communication strategy, Santé publique France drew on two qualitative studies conducted among consumers: an exploratory study conducted in early 2023 and a pre-test of the communication campaign in November 2023.
