Food insecurity among women receiving food aid: associations with obesity. Abena 2011–2012

Introduction - Food insecurity is one of the factors potentially involved in the associations between poverty and obesity, particularly among women. The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of food insecurity and to analyze its association with body weight among women receiving food assistance. Methods - Food insecurity was measured using the "U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module" administered during face-to-face interviews as part of the 2011–2012 Abena study, a cross-sectional study including a random sample of recipients at food assistance facilities (take-home food or meal distribution) in six French urban areas. Mean body mass index (BMI) values and obesity prevalence (BMI ≥ 30) among women were compared across food insecurity categories, adjusting for age. Results - "Moderate" food insecurity affected 31.4% of households headed by women receiving food assistance (n = 972), and "severe" food insecurity affected 43.4%. Among women with children (n = 774), 34.8% reported “moderate” food insecurity for their children and 8.2% reported “severe” food insecurity. The average BMI of women and the prevalence of obesity tended to be higher as the food insecurity category increased, particularly when their children were experiencing "severe" food insecurity (58% of mothers were obese in this case). Conclusion - Despite the food aid received, food insecurity remains widespread among these women. Its long-term consequences, particularly on their health and that of their children, still need to be clarified.
