Food environment: current state of knowledge in the United States and Canada

Why is obesity on the rise in the United States and Canada? A team of researchers from Quebec specializing in this issue points out that several factors are at play: the individual and their behaviors, the social context, and the environment—that is, the built environment, green spaces, and the more or less regulated location of food retailers in the neighborhood. This environment is a significant factor; it may partly explain the higher prevalence of obesity in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
