The Impact of Asthma on Career Paths in France: Analysis of Data from the Constances Cohort. Summary

Asthma has a negative impact on career trajectories in France. In this study, when asthma was assessed using a symptom score, significant associations were observed with the career trajectory indicators studied (length of employment, number of jobs, number of part-time jobs, periods of interruption due to unemployment or health issues, employment status), among both men and women. When asthma was defined dichotomously, these associations were more pronounced among women. Prevention efforts aimed specifically at maintaining employment and facilitating the return to work for people with asthma must be strengthened. Support for workers with asthma and those exhibiting symptoms suggestive of asthma, involving occupational physicians and clinicians, should be encouraged to maintain employment and facilitate a return to work.
