Key Points - Week 35 (August 20–26, 2018)

  • In the Indian Ocean region, during the second week of school, emergency room visits for childhood asthma rose sharply (+108%) compared to Week 34 and accounted for 7.4% of total activity. These figures are comparable to those observed at the start of the 2017–2018 school year. The proportion of hospitalizations following a visit remains stable, with approximately one-quarter of visits resulting in hospitalization.

  • Nationally (including the Indian Ocean region), among children, visits to emergency departments and SOS Médecins clinics for asthma have risen slightly compared to last week (by 16% and 24%, respectively), and the proportion of hospitalizations following an asthma-related visit (26%) remains stable.
