Key Points

Week 38 (September 16–22, 2024):

  • In the Indian Ocean region, the number of emergency department visits and hospitalizations following such visits for asthma among children under 15 has stabilized (5th week of school in Réunion) compared to Week 37. The proportion of cases (6.5%) is also stable and comparable to that observed in the previous two years.

  • Nationally, during the third week of the school year, asthma-related visits among children under 15 are down in emergency departments (-9.5%, or 480 fewer visits) and have stabilized at SOS Médecins clinics.

  • The activity rates in emergency departments (5.5%) and within the SOS Médecins network (3.1%) are down and stable, respectively, compared to Week 37 but still significantly exceed the levels observed in previous years.

  • The proportion of hospitalizations following an emergency department visit for asthma has declined for the second consecutive week, falling from 34% in Week 37 to 30% in Week 38.
