Key Points

Week 38 (September 16–22, 2024):

• In the Indian Ocean region, the number of emergency department visits and hospitalizations following such visits for asthma among children under 15 has stabilized (5^th week of school in Réunion) compared to Week 37. The proportion of cases (6.5%) is also stable and comparable to that observed in the previous two years.

• Nationally, during the third week of the school year, asthma-related visits among children under 15 are down in emergency departments (-9.5%, or 480 fewer visits) and have stabilized at SOS Médecins clinics.

• The activity rates in emergency departments (5.5%) and within the SOS Médecins network (3.1%) are down and stable, respectively, compared to Week 37 but still significantly exceed the levels observed in previous years.

• The proportion of hospitalizations following an emergency department visit for asthma has declined for the second consecutive week, falling from 34% in Week 37 to 30% in Week 38.
